Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organisation which seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from teh world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer labour and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families and no profit, finance with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more habitat houses. Special Olympics Athletes and the Gaelic Lions:
__
On Monday, October 15th, 10 of the SGL crew's finest athletes participated in a joint training session with the Special Olympics athletes at Bishan Stadium. After some initial warm up drills, the participants were put through their paces with a set of interval running drills capably led out by Lincoln Palmer (not quite resemblin Brian Habana) and Siobhan Carmody. Once recovered, a light introduction to the basic pincipals of Gaelic football was led by Paul P, a contradiction in itself - and the rest of the attending Lions and Lionesses. A highlight of the eveneng was seeing some of the SO athletes hand passing and soloing with the ball.
The training was a great event for all involved, and thanks goes to the organiser and new mom, Denise Glennon as well as Tracy Clemmer who has nurtured a great relationship with the SO committee.
While only a short time commitment, the event reminded all of the importance and proximity of our clubs chosen charity. SGL intends to raise money for the Special Olympics during the upcoming marathon event. All efforts to support the cause are appreciated.
Previous Seasons
In addition to promoting Gaelic football, the club also focuses on contributing to local charities. Over recent years, the club has donated S$10,000 to the Singapore Special Olympics, S$5,000 to Habitat For Humanity Singapore, S$11,000 to the Singapore Cancer Society, and together with the Singapore St. Patrick’s Society, raised over S$20,000 for Tsunami relief efforts.
