Ladies Exiles
Most Valuable Player - Rachelle Duggan
The exiles went into this years' Games with a clearly defined agenda - To get knocked out quickly and retire gracefully to the comfort of the beer tent. We started out extraordinarily well with our star player taking a hit for the team in the first match just when it looked like it might be going our way. With the ensuing delay to give our opponents a rest and the blood-curdling screams of MRB to frighten the life out of our girls - Ger Barry was confident we were about to throw it all out the window. (For good measure, he had eaten some dodgy chowder the day before so that he wouldn't accidentally become razor-sharp, as he is wont to do.) Anyway, we progressed on with some near misses in the shape of a few draws and thankfully a defeat to Japan and ended Day 1 on a high.
Day 2 started out very well. By now, MRB was in agony, Teresa Ahern refused to take off her sunglasses, Terri was absent and there were more hangovers than we cared to admit. And then tragedy struck - we started to play as a team and feck it but some of the girls who up until a few weeks ago didn't know one end of a football from the other, were suddenly breaking loose of their markers and soloing down the pitch! Lucinda and Mel started running like women possessed, Rachel and Maylene morphed into tigers and as for Kelly - schoolgirl error to allow Neil to shout on encouragement from the sidelines, sure it drove her mad all together. Despite her best efforts, Ads started scoring goals and to show it was contagious, Lucy M caught the scoring fever and brought the ball all the way up the pitch, planting it into the opposition goal of Taiwan a la Croke Park. Rachel Cox refused to obey any sideline instructions to slow down and drop the ball and before we knew it, the Singapore Exiles were ensconced in the tent for a pre-Final rub down. Feck.
But to show all's well that ends well, we went out on the pitch for the final and lost quite badly to an excellent Japanese team (see above). However, something very unexpected did happen that weekend - The Singapore Exiles turned out to be a fantastic bunch of girls with a great sense of fun and brilliant athletes into the bargain. So each time you look at your Ladies B Runner's Up Medal girls - remember the craic, the effort and the fantastic friends you can always count on. 200%.
