The 2008 Asian Gaelic Games were held in Penang over the weekend of the 10th to the 12th of October. The Gaelic Lions travelled to Penang in numbers, with over 140 players and supporters making the trip. We fielded 5 men's Football teams, 3 ladies teams and 2 Hurling teams.
Huge congratulations to the Hurler's who beat Dubai in a great final to claim their first Asian Championship. Not to be outdone, the Ladies B team met and defeated Shanghai A in the Plate final and duly returned to Singapore as Champions also.
More congratulations to the Coach of the Year, Teresa Ryan and also to our 4 All-Stars, Tessa McGovern, Cormac O'Muircheartaigh, Darragh Brady & Joe Lyons. Well done all.
This year we honoured Alan Power's memory at the games and we think he'd have been happy with our orange t-shirts anyway! A minutes silence in his and Derek Brady's honour was held before the finals on Sunday and on Sunday night, AP's parents Billy & Mary presented the first Alan Power MVP Trophy. We missed the giving out all weekend long AP!!
Our thanks to Coaches Donnacha, Aidan, Jon & Denise along with their assistants who worked so hard throughout a difficult season. Tour Manager Helen Fridell was quite simply phenominal organising rooms, ice, buses, nights out, sambos - you name it, she had it covered.
Off the pitch, the Gaelic Lions out did themselves once again ... and the Toucan (finally) made it back to Singapore safely after a final desperate kidnap attempt by Dubai on the Monday and had to be (heroically) rescued by the Malay Police!!
