Bill Nikolopoulos Cup 2009

The series is an International Rules Series between the Singapore Wombats and the Singapore Gaelic Lions that is played in honour and rememberance of the great Bill Nikolopoulos who sadly passed away in March 2006 and was a key member of teams in both Clubs.  This is the fourth year of the series with the Lions taking the honours in 2006 & 2007 and the Wombats coming out victors in 2008.

As Bill would say .... Giddy up, Tough Guys!!!

GAME 1:  Sat May 23rd - Turf City

The Wombats took this game by 7 points in the end.  SGL started strongly with a lead built up in the first and second quarters.  The Wombats pulled ahead in the 3rd Quarter and finished strongly.  That evening the Wombats hosted the Lions in Uluru for the now annual Table Quiz where revenge was gained and the Irish proved bigger nerds than the Aussies once again.

GAME 2:  Sat June 13th - SCC Pitch @ Dempsey

For those of you with very good reasons not to have been there, here is a snapshot of the day.

Saturday started with a slightly mixed panel of SGL Mens vs. Wombats, playing to the tough aggressive standard we're used to witnessing.  The Cubs showed the rest of what it's about - great gutsy play from the next generation.  Pitch-side, there were presentations & speeches to Teresa and Peter Ryan. With their departure from Singapore imminent, we'd like to say many thanks for all their hard work, wish them best of luck for the future & welcome Peter Tierney as Head Honcho from August onwards.
Next were the SG Lionesses with Ruairi pouting like Wenger and PC a gum-chewing Sir Alex. It was decided that Jen Allen plays better after a heavy night & this is to be encouraged in Bangkok. Sport was the eventual winner but the Ladies panels are looking serious contenders for October.  (In my utterly unbiased opinion)
Last Up. The Big One.
SG Lions needed to make up a deficit larger than Ireland's Economic collapse. If only Mr. Cowen could call upon the kind of talent at our disposal. It was heart and soul out there Ladies and Gentlemen. Heart and Soul. Also some downright filthy play which frankly, gave the crowd something to roar about. Ultimately the Lions left as series Victors but it was hard won.
All credit to the Wombats, they did their traditional third quarter rally and refused to give up. Congrats to our Lions and same time next year lads!
