Last weekend Singapore again competed in the Asian Gaelic Games in Phuket, Thailand. Rather surprisingly, Singapore made it all the way to the finals and actually should have won the tournament. This years tournament was the first to donate a large sum of proceeds to charity.

Phuket, Thailand:
Over 200 members of Irish community in Asia and friends of Ireland traveled to the tropical resort of Phuket to join in the event which has grown to become the largest Irish sporting event in Asia. Every county in Ireland (and a few in the US and Canada...) were represented.

Teams travelled from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan. Even Thailand fielded a team assisted by Irish people based elsewhere in the region including Australia, China, Korea and Malaysia together with a team of Asian Exiles now based in Ireland.

The main competition was seven-a-side mens and ladies Gaelic football. There was also an exhibition hurling match. Japan and Hong Kong were the last year's holders of the mens and ladies Asia Gaelic Games titles. Both teams retined thier titles.Singapore battled Japan in the men's final, and were unlucky not to have won the match.

What's that on Stevie's shoulder?
Overall the team was quite happy with thier weekend performance, and had a quick beer with the Japan lads right after the game

Cracking Craic! The weekend finished up with a bang of party. 200 Irish guys, an open bar, and a priest... Sounds like the intro to a classic joke eh?. The Singapore boys lived it up in true Gaelic Lions style. Beer soaked blue jeans, slamdancing and then straight to Soi Eric.

The Ireland Fund of Japan generously agreed to act as Patron for the event with the aim of promoting the work of the Ireland Funds in Irish communities in Asia (The only Ireland Fund in Asia at present is in Japan) and to encourage the establishment of other Ireland Funds in the Asian Region.

For the first time ever, this year's event raised a substantial amount for charity - two projects will be supported, one in Thailand and one Ireland-based charity to nominated by the Ireland Fund of Japan. The Thai charity will be represented by Father Joe Maier whose "Human Development Centre" in the Klong Tey suburb of Bangkok has been nominated as the designated charity in Thailand.

The Human Development Centre in Klong Tey, Bangkok co-ordinates 31 kindergarten schools for 4,500 slum children aged three to six. In addition, Fr. Maier's centres also provide vocational training, support for AIDS sufferers and even hospice care for older children but the emphasis is on equipping young, poor children to enter the Government school system. The Asia Gaelic Games with representatives based throughout the region, are keen to further develop links with sporting and social groups in the region and welcome this opportunity to support such a deserving cause (For more information see the HDC website)
